SUMMARY
As a leader in specialized pediatric orthotics, Boston Orthotics & Prosthetics (BOP) takes great pride in cultivating top-tier clinicians, technicians, and administrative staff. Their commitment to training and development is evident in the skill, expertise, and passion of their leadership teams.
Like many organizations with training at their core, BOP faced the challenge of adapting to online training during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a nationally expanding organization, it seemed logical to expand online training as a cost-effective and efficient solution for scaling. However, as a healthcare facility, BOP recognized that mentorship and in-person training were irreplaceable elements of their educational model. While their existing online learning solution still served a purpose, it was not going to be adequate for their evolving needs, prompting the search for a more effective alternative.
To chart a clear path forward, BOP partnered with Dr. Page Chen to engage in a series of Strategic Learning Experience Design workshops. These sessions identified key business objectives where refining the broader learning strategy could deliver the greatest impact. The workshops were followed by surveys and interviews with training leaders across the organization to uncover existing practices, preferences, and constraints.
The discovery process revealed a critical need: a digital competency-tracking solution that could integrate mentorship, in-person training, and online content while offering robust tracking and reporting on employee progress. Based on these findings, Two Tree recommended a competency tracking platform tailored to BOP’s needs, balancing advanced features with user-friendly simplicity.
As the platform’s implementation approached, BOP’s program directors adopted Two Tree Solution’s PP/AA/RR Approach to ensure seamless integration. In collaboration with Two Tree, BOP identified and defined the competencies required for every role within the organization and established a streamlined process for preparing for and assessing mastery of each competency. Several hundred competencies later, BOP’s new platform and restructured content were ready for a full-scale staff launch. The early results have been overwhelmingly positive, with learners and mentors embracing the revamped system. The solution's intuitive design and structured approach are driving better knowledge retention and empowering employees to apply their learning effectively in day-to-day practice.
